The price
We did the math on athousand-dollar fly rod.
Here’s what’s in one: carbon, resin, thread, guides, glue, cork, and about six hundred dollars of heritage.
We kept the first five. We upgraded the grip. And we skipped the heritage, on the grounds that no fish has ever been impressed by a logo.
$450. Same aerospace-grade carbon. Same obsessive taper work. None of the catalog.
Not a dig on wine
Grips with attitude.Cork is for wine.
Cork's been the standard for about a hundred years, mostly because it's been the standard for about a hundred years. It feels great in the shop. Then it crumbles, it swells, and it soaks up everything your hands are covered in — fish slime, sunscreen, river water, which is most of the day.
Ours is a proprietary polyurethane blend. It doesn't absorb any of that, so it never gets slimy, and it doesn't pit, compress, or wear into a ring of missing chunks.
Then we print original artwork on it. Which means the best looking part of the rod is the part your hand covers. Sorry about that.
It's also the only part of the rod anybody ever asks about.
